Pit Head Tramway
Todays postings mark the start of a series of images taken on a visit to the "Big Pit" mining museum at Blaenavon back in January with good friend and fellow Flikrite Pete AKA PX99 www.flickr.com/photos/pedz/. I had visited before in 2008 as part of a WFC photomeet which was a very enjoyable experience. On that day there were about twenty of us crawling over the site and although I was very pleased with the results always wanted to go back for a more considered less rushed shoot. So on the 25th Jan 2012 we arrived to leaden skies and a biting cold wind. When we entered the site we were the only ones there apart from the small number of staff that were carrying out maintainence work. So with a new tripod and great enthusiasm I set about trying to capture the essence of the place as I saw it.
As well as capturing a record of this once mighty industry I wanted to try and capture the almost haunting feel of the empty rooms and spaces that once thrived with the sight and sounds of a working colliery. To that end I've spent nearly three months off and on preparing these images and hopefully with careful PP work have managed to capture that feeling with some gritty, detailed and sometimes sympathetic images. I can only leave you the viewer and your imagination to fill in the sounds that would have been heard here, and to encourage you to get there for your own experience if you can. It's a remarkable place and there's no shortage of material to shoot.
Finally. I hope you enjoy these images which will be posted over the coming months alongside my usual mix of landscapes etc. They will all eventually end up in their own set which can be accessed from alongside the images or through my "Miscellaneous" collection.
