weathered sandstone

The effects of water, gravity, and wind are apparent in the beautiful sandstone rocks of the Colorado Plateau- here at Capitol Reef National Park. The boulder in the foreground bears the marks of dissolution of minerals influencing the pocketing of the rock. In the background the cliffs of the Waterpocket Fold show the influence of erosional deposits subsequently exposed by uplift and breakdown by freeze thaw, gravity, and water.
