First light hits the tops of Temples of the Sun (r) and Moon (l, appears short from this angle) as well and the amphitheater in the background in Lower Cathedral Valley, Capitol Reef National Park. The normally pale Entrada sandstone picks up the early warm sunlight beautifully. On this morning the period of first light was cut short by clouds near the eastern horizon. The fine grained sand and silt layers of the Entrada, deposited 160 million years ago in tidal flats, is apparent in the subtle striping on the monolith. Not sure what was going on with the clouds, but they were similar to wave/ lenticular clouds flowing over the high plateaus to the west. (i)
