The injured dove
I needed to get out of the office and walk a bit, so I went out walking to pick up something quick and inexpensive for lunch. On the way out of the complex I came across this injured pigeon. It was trying to get away from me, but could do little more than hop about; it's right wing and side were injured. I thought about trying to "rescue" it, but I certainly have no ability to heal an injured wild bird, and no knowledge of where to take it. But I could tell it was tired; while it tried to hop away from me at first, it finally seemed to resign itself to its fate and sat still while I got quite close with the 17mm to take this photo of it.
It's just one bird, just a pigeon, but it's a stark reminder of all the injured and damaged wild life in Florida, of the massive on-going BP oil spill off Florida's Gulf shores which I had a small part in because I drive a car, and the Great Pacific Garbage Patch which I've helped contribute to in my own way and is now twice the size of Texas.
On the way back the pigeon was gone. I hope it found refuge in the bushes it was trying to reach as I took this photo earlier.
