~ A Pearly Veil

a pearly veil,

now, I can see

cape arago

on the oregon coast

near coos bay.

one sunday morning,

i awake at 5 am and

drive to the cape

only to find it shrouded in fog.

i sit in the pickup for an hour

sipping coffee

and listening to the sound of the surf.

the tide is out.

finally, i give up

and drive back

to the Sea Basket

in Charleston,

where i eat bacon and eggs

at the counter.

i listen to the friendly conversation

of men who fish for a living.

there is steam on the inside of the windows

that overlook the boats in the harbor.

i drive back out to the cape

and hike down to the beach

the fog had lifted

and i can see.
