Baker's Lake Preserve is one of the most successful savanna restorations in Chicago Wilderness. A 35 x 95-ft island in the lake is home to a previously natural rookery now restored with artificial nesting structures. In late March and April you can observe black-crowned night herons, great blue herons, great egrets, and double crested cormorants nesting here. An ancient peat bog, the lake lies on the path of one of North America's migratory flyways.
