Looking straight down 5th Avenue past Harlem, Central Park, Midtown Manhattan, the Empire State Building all the way to the Twin Towers of the real World Trade Center. The Harlem River shimmers with oil slicks at sunset. New York. July 1984
A small crop of all a much larger negative showing the sheer vastness, the interplay and complexity of buildings, neighborhoods and architecture. Although hidden by the Empire State Building in the center of the view, both WTC towers are standing tall and proud on this cloudy summer late afternoon.
Keep in mind that in the 1980s, NYC was still deep in its "malaise era" with astronomical crime levels, ever-present graffiti, the new crack epidemic, burned out destroyed neighborhoods in the Bronx, parts of Brooklyn, Harlem and the Lower East Side. The gentrification process had not begun yet, but it sure looked amazing at sunset from a distance.
