Cooling pond dam failure on Tuesday

A photo taken on Tuesday, October 11 shows the 50-foot rupture of the dam along a 1.2-billion-gallon cooling pond at Duke Energy's H. F. Lee power plant. Helicopter inspections by Duke Energy failed to identify the collapsed dam on Wednesday morning, and the company would not become aware of the breach until Wednesday afternoon, when a local news crew called after flying over the site.
