Jefferson County Piling & Structure Removal Nov. 2013-Jan. 2014. Photo. DURING
In November 2013 DNR started removing nearly 900 derelict, toxic, creosote-treated pilings and 5000 square feet of old dilapidated dock and other structures along a 40-mile stretch of shoreline in eastern Jefferson County. They are being removed to help clean up the marine waters of dangerous chemicals like creosote which used to be used as a wood preservative and has been found to contain highly toxic chemicals. These chemicals continue to leach into the marine waters long after the lifespan of the wooden structures. Photos during removal at Quilcene.
