Fallout Shelter Handbook: Cover

From 1962, deep in the midst of the Cold War. I found this amongst piles of musty smelling magazines and articles at a booth at the Inman Park Arts Festival several years back. The cover is classic: your average white American family enjoying life as best as they can after an atomic attack. What I love the most about it is that Mom is in her day dress, apron and all, preparing dinner, and Dad is relaxing in his jacket, smoking a pipe, having just finished reading the liner notes to something by the Ray Coniff Singers, probably.

The rest of the handbook is some interesting stuff if you dig construction how-to's -- this could've been sold at a Home Depot if they had them at the time. There are some very interesting ads in the handbook, too. Check out the rest of the images I've scanned to see more.

See the entire set here.

Also worth noting: One Nation Underground.

amazing how similar the shelter behind my home is to the one's photographed and described. The best part was we bought the 1959 mcm house from the original owner's estate with the fall out shelter completly intact. I don't think anyone had been in there since the '60s. Full of canned food, ready to eat rations, clothes, board games....it's truly a time capsule.

this is the ideal of day one, i bet by day two they would have gone insane in that little space and wrecked it like a vault in fallout3

It's the end of the world as we know it -- and yet mom and dad are still dressed for success!

I came from the lower middle class Scruburbs and, although I don't know exactly how this could happen, my best friend for a while was a guy whose father was a dentist. His was the only family I ever knew who had a fallout shelter. They were the stuff of legend for me until then.

When I stayed over, we played hide and seek from his little brother -- scaring little kids is one of the supreme joys of adolescence -- and always wound up in the shelter. Still recall little bro standing at the entryway to the shelter and calling into the dark in a shaky voice "Hey! Are you guys in dere"? Good times.
