EMPRESS of AUSTRALIA 12,037 gross tons, 6,657 net. 21,165 dwt. Lbd: 445' x 70'7" x 41'6". (135.6 x 21.5 metres) Steel twin screw motor vessel designed as a passenger - vehicle ferry (roll on - roll off) built by Cockatoo Dock & Engineering Co, Sydney for the Australia National Line. Launched January 18 1965 and given registration at Hobart. Twin screw, diesel engine. 17 knots. Serviced Sydney to Tasmania route then transferred to the Melbourne to Devonport run in 1972. Original passenger capacity was increased from 250 in cabins to almost 450 for the Melbourne - Devonport overnight service Her transport cargo capacity was about 158 vehicles including semi trailers. Sold 1985 to unknown owners, registered Greece, managed by Sun Cruises Maritime and renamed Empress as a 'cruise liner'. Tonnage re-measured at 8,196, 2725 net. Sold 1991 renamed Royal Pacific. Tonnage re-measured at 13,176. Sank in the Malacca Strait (2.27N/101.36E) in 23 August 1992 after a collision
