San Francisco - Fisherman's Wharf: Musée Mécanique - Mutoscope
"Old Time Movies XXX", promises the sign on this mutoscope, a viewing machine invented in 1895 by W.K.L. Dickson and manufactured by the American Mutoscope Company. The mutoscope, using pictures taken by a mutograph, created the illusion of movement by flipping through a serious of continuous pictures when the customer turned a hand crank.
The Musée Mécanique, located on Pier 45 at the foot of Taylor Street in San Francisco's Fisherman's Wharf, is one of the world's largest privately owned collections of mechanically operated musical instruments and antique arcade machines. The collection, started by Edward Galland Zelinsky, moved to the wharf in 2002 from the lower level of the Cliff House restaurant at Ocean Beach.
