San Francisco - Mission District: Balmy Alley - A Tribute to Archbishop Oscar Romero
A Tribute to Archbishop Oscar Romero, a mural on Balmy Alley, was painted by Jamie Morgan in 2001.
Balmy Alley is located off 24th Street to Garfield Square between Treat Avenue and Harrison Street. The murals of Balmy Alley date to 1972 with the work of the two women team of Patricia Rodriguez and Graciela Carillio, known as Las Mujeres Muralistas. In 1984, a project led by Ray Patlan installed murals throughout the alley with the common themes of celebrating indigeneous Central American cultures and protesting American intervention in Central America. This culminated in the addition of twenty seven murals during the summer of 1985, funded in part by a grant of $2,500 from the Zellerbach Foundation.
