NYC - Greenwich Village: Our Lady of Pompei Church

Our Lady of Pompeii Church, at the intersection of Bleecker and Carmine Streets, was built in 1929 by the South Village Italian American communiy replacing a church where St Francesca Xavier Cambrini, the first american citizen to be canonised worshipped. The Italianate neo-classical church uses an asymmetrically placed tower to frame what is now Father Demo Square, an open space created when 6th Avenue was extended below Carmine street. The plot was later named for Father Antonio Demo, an Italian-born priest who served in Our Lady Of Pompeii Church for 35 years.
