NYC: Pete's Tavern

Established in 1864 and thereby in the running for the much-disputed title of New York's oldest bar in continuous operation, Pete's Tavern (129 E 18th St) holds dark wood booths and lamppost-like lighting fixtures that seem like they've been in place since day one. Not even Prohibition force Pete's to close its doors: it remained open disguised as a flower shop. It still looks as exactly the as same as when its most celebrated regular O. Henry wrote the classic Gift of the Magi here at his favorite booth by the front doors, in 1904.
