Florida - Palm Beach - Pan's Garden - Erect Prickly Pear Cactus

Founded in 1994 by The Preservation Foundation of Palm Beach, Pan's Garden is a unique botanical garden consisting of over 300 native Florida plant species. Since its inception the garden has been home to numerous interdisciplinary educational programs designed to provide students with a glimpse into the wonders of plants and the importance of preserving the world's natural resources.

The Erect Prickly Pear Cactus (Opuntia Stricta) typically grows with flat, rounded platyclades that are armed with two kinds of spines; large, smooth, fixed spines and small, hairlike spines called glochids that easily penetrate skin and detach from the plant. Prickly pear cacti are found in abundance in the West and Southwest of the United States and throughout much of Mexico. Prickly pears are also the only types of cactus natively found to grow in the eastern United States.
