Impact of signal retimings on traffic speeds on Valencia Street

I think 14th and 15th Streets must be part of a different synchronized system that keeps them from being part of this. Speeds are in miles per hour and are overall through speeds including stops.

Data from Cabspotting.

Interesting, I hadn't heard about this. Now I'm curious to see if the data backs their claims. Can you tell in 2008 how low speeds got due to congestion during peak traffic? And when congestion was low did speeds get close to 25? Any sense of vehicle throughput?
  • Eric Fischer 4y

I don't think I can make any claims about total throughput since all I have is the samples from whatever taxis happened to be on the street at any given time. I don't know if I have enough data to differentiate speeds at different times of day, but I'll give it a try tonight and see what it looks like.

OK, I plotted it hour by hour, with a lot of noise but not totally garbage:

I don't see any evidence that speed was ever that far below the current average speed, even at the hours of highest congestion. Speeds do appear to have been somewhat higher at some times of day.

i should have viewed this slide first! this is very interesting - I hope it provides some comfort that signal time makes for safer driving and for pedestrians and bicyclists as well

I think it is a great street for walking and a good one for biking, and I hope it keeps on getting better. I have to wonder if most drivers even notice that the overall speed is lower than it used to be. I doubt that they do.

How many cabs did you have for each hour?
