Hostess Big Wheels box, 1976

    Newer Older

Here is the front side of a 1976 Hostess Big Wheels cakes box, featuring the long-since-retired Chief Big Wheels. Has anyone seen any commercials of this character?

[:::] John -- I guess you've just got Ring Dings up there? If so, I'm curious whether you prefer the Ring Dings or the Ding Dongs. Maybe a taste-test is in order.

Hostess bought out Drake's, who makes Ring Dings as you know. I wondered if they were still using different formulas or if they consolidated.

We had a heated debate at work about 10 years ago on the Ring Dings vs. Ding Dongs issue. I was adamant about Ding Dongs being superior, and reminded everyone about King Ding Dong and all that. We had some Ring Dings shipped in from the Northeast and had a little blind taste test. It was very close, but Ring Dings won. But I'm happy to report that I preferred the Ding Dongs in the blind taste test.

Now this is one of those things that in this age of retro marketing (cars, etc.) we must hope gets reissued! I got in on the whole snack cakes thing around '78, so I must have just missed the Chief. I do recall the foil wrapping - it was so much cooler, and space age!

[:::] Ron -- Chief Big Wheels was around at least into the early '80s, but I'm not sure when he disappeared. It would be cool to see him again, but I doubt it will happen. Hostess has been abandoning its old mascots.

[:::] Jack -- I'd love to find some of the old commercials with Chief Big Wheels in them.

Colorado is ding dongs, and Panama '93-'95 at least, was also ding dongs!

[:::] Alliedoll -- Thanks for the information. It seems that Big Wheels went away in the late 1980s, as best as I can tell. Then King Dons went away in the late 1990s or so. All three cakes were the same of course.

Yeah, Big Wheels were done by '89. The name game with this product had to do with Drake's Ring Dings which was the same hockey puck cream filled chocolate covered cake. When Drake became part of Hostess about 10 years ago ( about ) is when they became Ding Dongs. Of course there are still Drakes Ring Dings. I know all this because my family has worked for Hostess Cake since 1960 and I was a salesman with the company from 1979 to 1995.

[:::] zzubaman -- That sounds about right. I was thinking they had lasted into the early '90s. I'll have to check my records on that.

I miss Big Wheels. Ding Dongs may be the same product, but I miss seeing the chief.

[:::] mrlucky1mg -- I'm sure there's ZERO chance of the Chief ever returning to store shelves too. That's too bad.

HAPPY HO-HO returned, along with the original TWINKIE THE KID & CAPTAIN CUPCAKE, so anything is possible!

That's not the real picture of the big wheel Indian!!!!

[:::] Moolou2 -- Yes, this is indeed Chief Big Wheels as he looked in 1976. Do you recall a different version of him, perhaps?

How do you go from being a Big Wheel to a Ding Dong?

    18. Waffle Whiffer 32 months ago | reply

[:::] Tipton -- It does sound like a step down when you phrase it that way. :-)

Hostess should reintroduce the Big Wheels cake. In it's original size and recipe. It will stir quite a crazy and hopefully help save the failing company. I'd hate to see them fold with such an awesome history.
