Recent events in Ukraine indicate that the crisis may be escalating into civil war, with the new administration in Kiev attempting to maintain order as pro-Russian rebels, vigorously defended by Russian President Vladimir Putin, seize city after city. While the international community considers action in Ukraine, the debate continues: Will U.S. sanctions against Russia's powerful elite make a difference? How much of a role will the energy industry play in deciding the strategy of the western world powers?
