An Afghan woman who left her country as a refugee in 1979, she returned to Afghanistan to establish underground classes for girls in 1999. After the defeat of the Taliban, she participated in the reconstruction of the country, focusing on access to education for women and girls.
The co-author of Toughing It Out in Afghanistan (Brookings, 2010), Ms. Sherjan discussed the prospects for education in Afghanistan after the end of U.S. major military operations.
