Frieda Hempel:

A postcard published by GG Co. [Gutmann & Gutmann of New York] Ser. 2193/3 featuring a 1904 photograph of soprano Frieda Hempel.


She was born in Leipzig, Germany on 26th June 1885 and died in Berlin on 7th Oct 1955.


She first appeared at the Covent Garden, London in 1907 and at New York's Metropolitan Opera House in 1912 where she sang numerous times with Caruso ~ they made a number of recorded extracts from Verdi's opera 'A Masked Ball'.


Hempel had an amazing flexible and brilliant voice singing such diverse roles as Mozart ~ 'Queen of the Night' to Wagner's 'Eva'.


On 9th Dec 1913 at New York's Met she sang the role of the Marschallin in the U.S.A. première of opera Der Rosenkavalier by Richard Strauss.


After 1919 she devoted herself to concert and recital and was particularly famous for recitals in which she appeared in costume as soprano Jenny Lind. See
