Max Alvary:

1884 ~ Max Alvary as Max in Weber's opera Der Freischütz (The Freeshooter) in a cabinet card by Court photographer "W. Hoffert" of Cologne, Photographer to his Majesty, the German Emperor.

 

Max Alvary [Maximilian Achenbach] was born in Dusseldorf, Germany on 3rd May 1856 and died there on 7th November 1898 leaving a wife and nine children.

 

His operatic debut was at Weimar in 1879. In 1885 he made his debut at the New York Metropolitan Opera in Carmen as 'Don José' opposite Lilli Lehmann. His Bayreuth debut came in 1891. He sang in the first Covent Garden Ring cycle, with Mahler conducting.

 

He retired through illness in 1897.
