Tenor John Coates was born in Yorkshire, England on 29th Jun 1865 and died in Middlesex, England on 16th Aug 1941.

 

He started out as a baritone and made his tenor debut in 1899 and was a noted Wagnerian heldentenor.

 

He sang with the D'Oyly Carte Opera Co. 1894/5 including appearing in 'Utopia Limited' in New York and Boston.

 

On 30th May 1901 at Covent Garden he created the role of 'Claudio' in Stanford's opera 'Much Ado about Nothing'
