World War 2 ~ the Siege of Malta.

Aug 1942 Grand Harbour, Malta ~ the tanker Ohio [part of Operation Pedestal] with her deck almost awash is aided by tugs and a destroyer [on her port side] brings desperately needed fuel. She is one of the few survivors from the Aug convoy and had been hit several times and set on fire - but made it.

# The Ohio was built for the Texas Oil Company and was the largest oil tanker in the world at the time of construction. she was launched on 20th April 1940 at the Sun Shipbuilding Yard in Chester, Pennsylvania, USA.

She was a ship of 9,263 tons, 515 feet in length and carried 170,000 barrels of oil.

Her design was especially for war time convoy duty - including shock absorbers etc in case of bomb hit and that is why she survived.

Quite apart from being bombed several times she was also torpedoed amidships, tearing a hole twenty-four feet by twenty-seven feet in the port side and the blast had also blown another hole in the starboard side and the compartment was flooded.

Ohio's anti-aircraft gunners shot down numerous planes and one of those, a Junkers 87, crashed straight into Ohio's starboard side.

After reaching Malta she never sailed again.
