[Dame] Alicia Markova [Prima Ballerina Assoluta] - born on 1st Dec 1910 in London, England and died on 2nd Dec 2004 in Bath, England.

 

In 1925 at the age of 14 she joined Diaghilev's Ballets Russes in Monte Carlo.

 

In 1929 she became the founder principal ballerina of The Ballet Club, a company founded by Dame Marie Rambert and later to be called Ballet Rambert.

 

In 1931 she was one of the founder dancers of Ninette de Valois's Vic-Wells Ballet, becoming prima ballerina in 1933.

 

In 1950 Markova and Dolin became the co-founders of the Festival Ballet, a company formed to celebrate the imminent Festival of Britain - In 1989 the Festival Ballet was renamed English National Ballet.
