Capitol Stairway Large - [Explore 12/30/2011]
Follow me here, too!
The Des Moines Capitol complex is home to several amazing spiral staircases. I spent four hours photographing the place and I only made it through two of the four floors. I highly recommend visiting here if you get the chance. They allow tripods, they encourage photography, the tours are free and the staff is GREAT.
This shot was an experiment to see how much distortion my 15-85 lens has in tight spaces. The earlier HDR shots of this same stairwell were all done out of one frame - I did not recompose between each shot. This image is a composite of 24 images (six exposures x 4 compositions). I wanted to see how things looked when I photographed the entire stairwell.
As you can see there is some distortion around the edges, but nothing too bad. I rather enjoyed shooting up there - as I said earlier the staff is great.
Here is my workflow:
6 HDR images shot with a Canon 7d, 15-85 and a Vanguard Tripod
Repeat step 1 three additional times to capture the rest of the stairs. I worked counter-clockwise
Edit in Lightroom and Nik HDR Efx
Import to CS4 and assemble this with the photomerge tool
Fix some minor distortion, dodge and burn as needed.
Add border and watermark
