Abandoned Copper Mine

Kennecott, Alaska

Perhaps my favorite place in Alaska was a hike up to an abandoned copper mine. The mine is in a very remote location about 175 miles from Valdez, beside the Kennicott Glacier. The mine was in operation from 1911 until it was eventually abandoned in 1938.

Many of the rocks around the area are very green from their high copper consistency. It's no wonder the area was chosen for mining.
