My friend Martha always sends out beautiful things through the mail. A few weeks ago she sent me a note using half a dozen uncanceled vintage stamps. Later we were talking about the question, why did beautiful engraved stamps have to disappear, anyway?
This might be one of my favorite stamps ever. But I'm biased. There are several modern telescopes larger than the 200-inch at Palormar, but none with the same style. Read all about it in Richard Preston's book First Light (written before he had his mega-bestseller with The Hot Zone).
Hey, and happy Thanksgiving, y'all.
