House of a Thousand Paintings by Sanford Darling – Santa Barbara, CA
House of a Thousand Paintings, Santa Barbara (1963–73)
by Sanford Darling (1894–1973)

At the age of 68, Sanford Darling began painting scenes of places he had visited on two world tours. He hung the completed works throughout the house; when he ran out of interior wall space, he proceeded to hang paintings on the exterior of the house. He then began painting in and on the house, creating scenes on various surfaces such as the refrigerator, window screens, and rugs. He was pleased that neighbors and their children would visit to view his work.

After Darling’s death, the house was dismantled, and many of the paintings were sold to folk art collectors.
