John in Safwan, Iraq

John at a food and water distribution point set up by the Army's Civil Affairs troops in Safwan, Iraq. These were Shiites who were all very happy to see us arrive in Iraq. At times, groups of Iraqi men surrounded me to tell me how grateful they were that we pushed their own army out of the region, and that they were desperate to leave Iraq to go anywhere else -- even Israel -- if that meant escaping Saddam. That made an impression on me. They knew that if anything illustrated how much they hated Saddam, it would be their eagerness to go even to Israel to get out of Iraq. Photo by some soldier who was nice enough to take my camera and snap this for me.
