1960 Black History Viewed Through Magazines
What can I say? I love vintage ads. I always have! But these vintage ads are a tad different. Many Black Americans and other people of color grew up paying particular attention to the stories and advertisements shown in the two top selling Black publications of the mid to late 20th century, Ebony and Jet Magazines. They saw people of color portrayed as average American people with the same consumer needs and desires as everyone else. These ads also represented an inclusive world free of prejudice, bigotry and stereotyping that was, sadly, easily found in mid to late 20th century real life. Same products, but a variety of different faces. There were a few Black models that crossed over to mainstream ads. These models were called on repeatedly for "ethnic ads" from 1958 through the 1970s. Helen Williams is one such model. I am searching for the names of the other pioneers.
