      You mean to tell me that this guy Jack "The Stupid" Dempsey turned down $50k because Mr. Harry Wills was a black man? How stupid can a person get? Ooh. I forgot Jim Crow had him by the you-know-what.

      The racism of the time period was a part of Dempsey's decision. The idea that a black man could hold the title of "Heavyweight Champion of the World" was intolerable. Rather than risk defeat, the "color ban" as it was called was the best strategy. Check out the history of Jack Johnson for more detailed info on this.
