Sharpshooter (top five hits: lesson #2)
After having had my first and only firing lesson in a shooting range out in Lachine, I had my first piano lesson in public at the Bain Saint Michel. The piano lesson was song number five in a playlist of my top five trigger songs – those songs that make me weep uncontrollably at the drop of a dime. Played back-to-back, this became another version of a listening session. The first four songs were pre-recorded, the last one played live on piano. And when I didn’t cry on cue, as was my initial expectation, I deliberately set myself up to fail, frustrating my own expectations. Without a contingency plan, this became a performance about simply being – being alone, being together, holding space collectively in a prolonged space of interval.
