Doug Purvis

Doug Purvis began playing tuba in Junior High at the age of 12. In 1964, he started 4 years of private lessons with Hubert Meyer of the Toronto Symphony Orchestra. After high-school, Doug was accepted at the Eastman School of Music, studying with Donald Knaub and Cherry Beauregard; he completed his Bachelor of Music degree in 1972. During this time and subsequently, he also studied with Arnold Jacobs of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra.

Doug's extensive freelance career included stints with the Canadian Opera Company, Hamilton Philharmonic, National Arts Centre Orchestra, Toronto Symphony, Esprit Orchestra, the Hannaford Street Silver Band as well as chamber music projects and studio recording.

Doug began his tenure as Principal Tuba with the Orchestra of the National Ballet of Canada soon after graduating from Eastman -- a position he held until his death in June of 2008.
