The Melanau Tall House

Making 6% of the Sarawak population the Melanaus are well known for their beautiful Tall House. The Melanau Tall House or Rumah Tinggi Melanau ( in Malay ) is built 40 feet above ground, its a brilliant engineering work given the fact, in the old days the tribe was very much isolated from modernity. Literature has it that the Melanaus occupied the coastal areas of Sarawak and were often prone to pirate attacks thus a tall house was a sort of protection for the community. Flood in the river banks and delta where the community lived was another reason for such a unique design.

P/S The so call “Models” in this photo are not Melanaus ; they are my son Alvin and my sister Caroline ( Bidayuhs )
