Evert Bloemsma’s FF Balance lowercase s

    Newer Older

There’s a review of Evert Bloemsma’s FF Balance typeface by Kris Sowersby over on I Love Typography.

Above, my little contribution. This is what I love about FF Balance and off Evert Bloemsma’s work in general. He was all about challenging conventions. The lowercase s of FF Balance looks top balanced, but it’s just an artifact from our perception. If you rotate it by 180 degrees you’ll see how it’s practically specular, and the weight distribution, which to us looks very much concentrated on the top part of the letter, is instead even and symmetrical.

One of my favourite type design lessons, evert!

It‘s the width of the arms that does it, I think.
