Heads Up. At 11:30 AM they started letting everyone back on the freeway. 18 hours ahead of schedule!

      Amazing!

I heard the penalty for going beyond the deadline was $600/minute, so I guess they were motivated.

After living in Bangkok for a few months, I miss the sanity of LA driving. Not brave enough to try driving in this city yet (can't even read the signs yet to know what they are warning me about.)

I was in and around LA May 2010. One thing I noticed was all the highway signs are dingy and dirty. I live in St. Charles Missouri, we get more rain than LA so all of our street signs are clean. I did enjoy the ride from LA to Carmel on the Pacific Coast Highway. If you live in LA you should try it. Also did the Tonight Show, great time. Unfortunately it let out around 4 pm. Took me 4 hours to get back to Carlsbad. I thought the traffic was bad here.

More specifically, the "405" is called a Freeway. In Los Angeles folks tend to use the definite article before a Freeway number. Therefore, "The 405 was closed." There was no "Carmageddon" because: a) The word was well put out, b) People feared getting stuck in traffic jams on alternate routes, c) People chose to be "good citizens," d) Folks were offered an excellent opportunity to take life easy, stay at home, take an "extra" holiday, e) All the above.

My sense is "all the above" but especially Los Angeles drivers demonstrated the strong potential to take life more slowly. Without the excuse, who knows for certain.

As I said to begin with.
That's right. People listened for once. No one wants to sit in traffic, anywhere..LA, San Diego or Carlsbad... no where!
