The German Do X twelve-engined giant flying boat [Germany, 1929-1930]
The 12-engined giant Dornier Do X flying boat was a delight for photographers at the time. Hundreds of pictures were made of the Do X registered in Germany as D-1929. Shown here is the Do X after the rebuilt with more powerful Curtiss Conqueror engines rated at 640 hp each - making a total of 7.880 hp. This was a considerable increase from the Siemens radials rated at 525 hp - a total of 6.300 hp.
Although a technological achievement the machine was commercially impractical.
Two samples of the Do X were built for Italy, fitted with 12 Fiat engines, but it seems they were used only for demonstration flights around Italy.
