I-64 Groundbreaking - September 8, 2015
NEWPORT NEWS —A ceremonial groundbreaking on Interstate 64 near Jefferson Avenue celebrated the beginning of a Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) construction project to bring congestion relief to one of the most heavily traveled areas on the Peninsula.

Divided into three segments, the I-64 Widening Project will add one travel lane and one shoulder lane in each direction between Jefferson Avenue (exit 255) to the second Route 199 interchange (exit 234) in York County. Construction on the first segment from Jefferson Avenue to Yorktown Road (exit 247) is scheduled to begin in mid-September. The segment is expected to be completed in December 2017.
