High Speed Photography
My experiments with DIY high speed photography equipment. These images are taken using my Air Gap Flash unit, which I've presented on my website:

To take an image, I first set the stage, and place a sensor in a fitting location. For popping balloons a microphone trigger is used. For the pellet gun I use a variable delay optical gate of my own design. The camera is set to a wide aperture in order to get enough light, and a long exposure. The exposure time is irrelevant, as long as it gives me enough time to trigger the event after snapping the image. Once the camera is set up I turn out the lights (absolute darkness is needed), start an exposure, and trigger the event. The electronic sensor will then blitz at just the right moment, giving a 300ns exposure. If I've set my delay correctly, I'm left with one of the images here!
