On August 24th, 1970 four individuals drove a van filled with 2,000 pounds of ammonium nitrate along with fuel next to Sterling Hall in order to bomb the Mathematics Research Center. Though the building was thought to be empty, a small number of researchers were still there. The bomb detonated, leaving $2 million in damages and one man, Robert Fassnacht, dead. Three of the men (Karl Armstrong, Dwight Armstrong, David Fine) were captured and convicted while Leo Burt has never been found.
