'Midsummer Night's Dream' at First Parish in Bedford

Worship is "holy theater" at First Parish in Bedford, Massachusetts—but the congregation also celebrates the arts on their own terms. In March 2012, members and leaders of the congregation, along with others from the community, staged a dramatic reading of Shakespeare's "A Midsummer Night's Dream."

Last year Lynes, who has a fine arts degree, organized a potluck to talk about an arts ministry. Forty people came up with fifty ideas, including workshops on puppetry and bookmaking, a six-week course for youth on arts and spirituality, and monthly gallery exhibits—which enthusiastic volunteers got up and running this fall almost without her knowing, she laughs.

"There are simply more reasons than ever to come to church," Gibbons says. "And if you don't come to church, the church will come to you."
