Pentax K5

    Newer Older

I just love this little camera, so much tech and amazing image quality in such a small package.

Its sitting there with an 85mm f2, a wonderful old lens that isnt much larger than most 50mm primes :D.

    This was shot using a gf1 with pentax auto 110 50mm 2.8 lens :).

I really like this, and I really like Pentax, though I feel like a little more light to the bottom right corner of the K5 would have made for some better separation. Great shot though, and awesome touch with the water!

Yer I think yor right vlad, the strap seemed to nick alot of the lighting to that part.. I should have bounced some in there :)

As for the water, my k5 was getting a little dusty.. it helps with the cleaning as well as emphasising one of the key features of the camera :D

Haha! Photographic porn! But I'd never cheat on my Canon 500D....unless it was a 5Dmk2

I tried a 5d mk1 before and hated it, Its probibly due to the canon layout more than anything as Im used to nikon/pentax (very similar).
Also the build quality felt very... cheep but the image quality from its 12mp FF sensor was very nice :).

I down/side graded my d3 to the k5, I miss the shallower DoF that the FF sensor gave me and nikons awesome AF but I couldn't be happier with the k5 :). Similar build quality and feel to the d3 and in some case's better image quality (lower iso, better dynamic range) and high iso is almost as good too :).

Was just nice to get back to pentax I guess (my first dslr).

Nooooo... that lens is not WR! Or is it? ;)

      Nice shot!

Thanks for all the nice comments :)

no :), I do have some WR lens but It was just a quick misting from a spray that I normaly use on my parrot :).

The lens got wiped down after (its an old M lens.. no electronics)

this is such a lovely picture, you've really caught the prettyness of the camera- in fact it's this image that always makes me want another pentax

I used to shoot pentax film, then pentax digital, then bought a canon 1d to go pro with- but now looking for a more portable camera to take about as I never went pro (but still might), thought about a k7 but high iso was useless, k5 came out and really wanted one but never pulled the trigger. Thought about a 5d2 but still too big and sucky af, thought about a 550d but too darn ugly, thought about a 60d but somehow didn't want it, set my heart on a leica but the minimum focus distance is too long and no macro (nothing to do with not being able to afford one, honest...) fuji x100- no interchangeable lens so no deal
thought about shooting film, was about to buy a pentax mx when I came full circle back to the k5 and I think this time I may actually get one- my only concern is that my canon system will get shelved!

I shoot mostly with flash, a 20mm lens and a 50 on full frame. So the k5 with the 15ltd and 31ltd would be my perfect 2 lens kit, add in the 100mm macro and an off camera flash and i'm set- i'm genuinely concerned that it would cause me to abandon my canon full frame kit entirely...
i'm also interested in the nex 7, but there's just something ugly about it

edit: not to mention the SR system for stabilised primes, (I really like shooting wide angle with 1/20 shutter to get motion blur), weather sealing, that 50-135 f2.8 and fantastic limited primes
wish canon would have some aps-c specific tiny prime lenses, the voigtlander 40mm f2 and 20mm f3.5 are about all you can get in native canon mount

The k5 is a pretty impressive camera.. build quality and image quality are all top notch, Id even say the k5 has better image performance than a FF nikon (although you don't get the DoF control).

High iso is similar to the d3/d700, sharpness is better and the shadow detail it retains is out of this word.. especially at iso 80.

I don't have any of the ltd lens, but id love too.. although the da* 50-135 f2.8 is a pretty impressive lens and even with the slow AF of that lens I was still able to shoot at the local skate park (first time doing action really) with decent results :).

Also you can use p-ttl flash off camera using the inbuilt flash (similar to what the 7d does).. Id rather use some radio triggers and manual flash's myself but its very handy at times :)

But the lens is not water resistant, isn't it?
