Yeah, this is where The King wanted to help "national security" and infiltrate and nark out the hippies. So Nixon enlisted him as a special agent in the war on drugs. Hilarious!

Isn't this also where Elvis brings a loaded .45 into the whitehouse for the president?

Both the subjects were famous people with large followings, tremendous gifts, and genuine genius in particular ways, and both destroyed a large part of what was best about themselves. But I suppose that everyone realizes that.

If Elvis would have gotten behind the anti-vietnam conflict and
protested, the war would have ended in a snap. People respected
Elvis, saw him as the boy-next-door. Whereas John Lennon was
seen as a deviant and too far the other end avantgard. However,
Elvis believed in the military being a soldier in Korea.
  • Rip Tanion 5y

Politicians don't make policy based on the whims of entertainers. And why should Elvis have gotten behind something he may not have believed in?

Elvis never served in Korea. He was drafted into the U.S. Army during peacetime, and was stationed for a period in West Germany.

"007-ELVIS", & Tricky Dick, it is rumored they were in the oval office singing...that would be a recording to hear...as would any talk of Nixon discouraging 'E' from running for the U.S.Presidency, apparantly Elvis told him he thought he could win with "all his fans".
It was the high-point of three days The King was on his own without any bodyguards, he even took a few 'coach' flights across the country!
Dick Cavette hosts a movie about the whole story, the VHS video of it is available here, but the DVD is only available in Britain.

My dad said "In years to come, kids will look in a history book and ask 'What was the matter with this president?', the economy was perfect, we put a man on the moon, and relations with China were never better".
