Resting — Taken in 2010, here's a shot of a female walrus and her pup sitting on an ice floe. The photo was taken during a tagging survey in the Chukchi Sea onboard the Norseman II in June 2010.

The Pacific Walrus is one of four marine mammal species managed by the Department of the Interior (DOI). The USGS Alaska Science Center conducts long–term research on Pacific walruses to inform local, state, national and international policy makers regarding conservation of the species and its habitat. The goal of our current research efforts is to refine and enhance models to project the future status of the Pacific walrus in the rapidly changing Arctic environment.
