2012 Dillsboro bat box monitoring
When the Dillsboro Dam was removed, its associated powerhouse was also destroyed, removing bat roosting habitat.

To address this issue, Duke Energy installed several bat boxes next to the Tuckasegee River in the vicinity of the former powerhouse. Biologists visit these boxes three evenings a year to monitor the number of bats using them.

Once the bats start emerging for the evening, the bat boxes are watched intently as biologists count the number of bats emerging.

Now in its fourth year of monitoring, it seems the bats have taken to their new homes.
