Jordan Crowder and John Fridell use view buckets to search for mussels
Biologists typically search for mussels by snorkeling, SCUBA diving, or using view buckets. Clear on the bottom, the view buckets function like large face masks, but allow the biologist to stay dry in cold water.
The biologists are looking for endangered Appalachian elktoe mussels that are carrying young mussels. They’ll be taken to a hatchery run by the North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission where the young will be grown and eventually released back to the wild to boost diminished populations.
