Taking a closer look at stream insects
The Pigeon River, in North Carolina’s Haywood County, is home to the endangered Appalachian elktoe mussel. Each fall, Service staff turn out to help out with the Haywood Waterways Association’s Kids in the Creek, an event that brings out nearly every eighth-grade student in the county for a river experience. Over the course of half-a-day, a student rotates through four stations – water chemistry, watershed health, fish, and stream invertebrates. Due to the presence of the Appalachian elktoe, the Service assists with the stream invertebrate station.
