A decrepit dam sits on the Cane River, in North Carolina’s Yancey County. Decades since the breached dam served any useful purpose, it’s a safety hazard and a barrier to fish and other aquatic animals – keeping them from moving up and downstream. The Service, along with a host of partners, is in the process of removing the structure, but first the partnership must deal with years of sediment build-up behind the structure.
As part of that process, engineers recently had to move the streambed upstream of the dam structure, after which biologists and students swept through the remnant pools in the dewatered river stretch to catch and move fish and other aquatic animals to the new channel.
