Each year the Service’s Asheville Field Office helps local non-profit Haywood Waterways host their Kids in the Creek event. The event brings nearly every 8th-grade student in North Carolina’s Haywood County out to the Pigeon River where they learn about watershed health, stream chemistry, and get in the river to collect and identify fish and macroinvertebrates. The Pigeon River is a priority area for the Fish and Wildlife Service due to the presence of the endangered Appalachian elktoe mussel, found upstream of Canton.
